DBT Orbit, 15 €. This device is an emulation of the Syncussion SY-1, a drum synthesizer from 1979. It has two analog drum voices side by side, and each voice has its own key, oscillator, pitch sweep, LFO and decay. You can choose between six oscillator modes, and the sweep can go up, go down or stay off.
What we chased
We wanted a drum synth with a vintage analog character, to make space toms and space snares.
The controls
TWO VOICES
Orbit has two analog voices, side by side, and each one has its own key.
OSC MODE
The OSC MODE knob chooses one of six oscillator modes, from A to F.
SWEEP
The SWEEP switch makes the pitch rise on each hit when it is set to UP, stay steady when it is set to OFF, and fall when it is set to DOWN.
LFO
The LFO section sets the speed and the depth of a triangle or square wave, and it can also work as a sample and hold.
TUNE, DECAY AND WIDTH
The TUNE knob sets the pitch, the DECAY knob sets the length, and the WIDTH knob sets the width of each hit.
TRIGGER
The TRIGGER button plays the voice, and you can also play it from MIDI.
TWO LOOKS
You can change the look by clicking the screw on the top left. The default look follows your Ableton theme, and the other is the dark hardware face.
Good to know
This device works with Ableton Live 11 and 12, and it needs Max for Live.
