THAT muted guitar sound, for the dub chop, in Max for Live for Ableton Live 11 and 12. Play it from your keyboard, or click the strings drawn on the guitar and drag across for a real pick stroke.

What we chase

I compose mostly on my piano, but I like having this specific guitar sound, and I could not find many plugins or presets that sounded good. So I recorded my own guitar, in several sessions, to get that simple, slightly naive sound that makes a track feel roots in seconds.

The controls

STRINGS. Click the strings drawn on the guitar to play them. Drag across for a pick stroke, or play from your keyboard.

SOUND. Three playing styles with JEU: Mute, Classic and Loose. Two mic settings with MICRO, A and B, for a different sound source on the same note.

LENGTH / DAMP. They control the envelope: LENGTH shortens the notes, DAMP chokes them a little more.

TONE. It works both ways: turn it left to darken the sound, right to brighten it, and the middle is the guitar as recorded.

PUNCH. A kind of compression that shapes the attack of each note, the way the pick hits the string.

DRIVE. A soft saturation: turn it up to warm the sound and make it bite a little.

VARIATION / VOLUME. VARIATION adds a little change in pitch and level on every hit, like a real hand. VOLUME is the output level.

What's inside

Presets. A good number of presets to find every sound this instrument can make, fast. Arrows next to the name.

Looks. Click the screw, top left, to choose the Ableton skin or one of the guitars.

My banks of studio guitar takes, recorded from muted to more open and relaxed notes, so you have a real choice. Under them, a few settings to make everything sound right.

Good to know

A Max for Live device for Ableton Live 11 and 12. Download, unzip, and drop the .amxd file on a MIDI track. Part of the Pandora Series, third wave.
